NEW.. locally based guide (seasonal) ... Bertus Jansen van Rensburg, Top South African angler and guide with a vast knowledge of these waters. Based very close to the lodge. Excellent all round shore and boat angling guide. In addition to lodge manager and expert staff.
The name Linene literally means, “It is good”. A gross understatement. The island is situated in the south-east corner of the Bazaruto Archipelago and adjacent to the San Sebastian Peninsula. It is located inside an estuary that falls within a wildlife sanctuary. It is a very healthy eco-system that is one of the reasons for the great fishing. Dugongs, dolphins and Manta Rays are a daily occurrence inside the estuary. The lodge offers excellent hospitality, great food, comfortable accommodation with a bar with that same deep-seated character found in English Pubs. But Linene is a fishing Lodge and it is a place where dreams and expectations merge into one incredible dose of adrenaline. It offers the best that Mozambique and even the rest of Africa has on offer.
Linene’s reputation in the SA market was a place revered and is synonymous with the best fishing in Mozambique and the lodge has achieved a legendary status.
Bertus recently hooked into a huge black marlin on a guided trip. The huge fish struck at baitfish just 10 metres from the boat. He cast a Barbie Pink Starwalker Stickbait and the marlin was on it in a second. After a 3.5 hour battle, towing the boat 15kms, the leader parted.!!! The fish was estimated at 400kgs.

Boat Fishing.. It can only be described as some of the best in the world. Nothing less. The lodge manager is Adrian Westraadt. Adrian is going for his 8th year and it was my first time fishing with him. The guy is brilliant. Full stop. After 7 years, he knows the area better than anyone and is a master boatsman. He fishes the area with confidence and I believe he is one of the best. His local knowledge is key and that adds a lot of value. Facets covered are basically everything from trolling for all species (including billfish), popping, jigging, dropshot, conventional and live-baiting. Due to the diversity, every need can be met. The abundance of fish is unbelievable. You genuinely have no idea what’s going to grab on the other end.
Popping.. From a popping perspective, heaven. Shoals of nervous fusiliers and baitfish holding over structure with a lot of current and pressure waves while sight-casting to “Mobile Bommies” (Cruising shoals of big Gt’s)'.You just know you’re going to get hit as you can see from the one link. GTs of 60kg+ are regularly seen by divers. They are hooked, but we lack the 'Aircraft Carrier' hardware necessary to boat them. This place offers it all, even regular strikes from billfish on poppers and stickbaits. Species encountered are pelagics, like Spanish Mackerel, Dorado, Yellowfin Tuna, Wahoo, Queen Mackerel, Barracuda etc as well as reef dwelling species like GTs and the rest of the Kingfish or Trevally family, like Yellowspot, Bludger, Golden, Bluefin, Brassy or Greenspot and Big-eye Kingfish aka Horse-eye Jack. Other species like Green Jobfish and Snappers are regularly encountered.
Popping tackle should be as beefed-up as possible due to the sheer size and numbers of fish. Do not, I repeat, do not come with inferior tackle as you will be on the receiving side of both fish and the barman. 80lb braid is the bare minimum and can be up to 130lb+. We use a popping rod from Jigging Master called a GT Monster 7'8 and 8'. As strong as they come. Be sure to bring a rod with plenty backbone. Reels should pump out a lot of drag like the Shimano Stella and Penn’s new Torque are good examples. You’ll need it. Poppers from the Heru range do quite well like the Cubera, Gt Mania and Skipjack. Stickbaits like the Wahoo and Ulua and the new Starwalkers do well. Starwalker is elsewhere more familiarly known as Gunz tailwalker. Terminals should be 250lb plus with hooks from Owner, JM and Shogun being good examples of quality.
Another little highlight, should the opportunity arise, is night time popping for Big-eye kingies off the jetty. They are attracted by baitfish that in their turn is attracted to the spotlights. While in the bar, the rods are at the ready for when they start smashing.
Jigging.. The jigging also offers a lot with shallow to deepwater jigging in a very short distance from each other with especially Amberjack and GTs proving very popular. There genuinely are denizens of the deep here, so be prepared. We use rods from the Jigstar and Jigging Master range like the Kojak from 250g to 450g, Three Kings Special and the Amberjack Sniper. Reels such as the Jigging Master and Alutecnos complete the picture, with 80lb – 100lb braid used with jigs from 100g up to 450/500g in deep water when there’s current for Amberjacks. Anything able to handle jigs of that weight should be fine.
A lot of focus is placed on jigging and popping due to their popularity and that suits Linene just fine. Adrian has numerous spots and reefs that are in VERY close proximity to the lodge. You can make your first cast within 3 minutes from going through the estuary mouth. As you can see on the video, simultaneous hits on jigs and poppers are really quite common.
Jigstar Africa.. I would like to mention Jigstar Africa as we are working closely together in supplying a top-end, custom service to international clients combined with specialised, technical knowledge in jigging and popping. They are the agents for world-renowned brands like Jigstar ,Jigging Master, Alutecnos, SW Labs, Heru (branded as Darkstar), Gunz Tailwalkers (branded as Starwalkers), CM Tackle, Jerry Brown and Vuarnet Sunglasses in South Africa. They offer clients the opportunity to buy the required and specific tackle necessary (often at a saving to the angler) without the drama associated with international angling travel. Rods, reels, braid, terminal, Jigs and Poppers can be arranged with them before a trip and the lodge will also stock a selection. Effectively cutting travel costs and excesses while acquiring specialist knowledge of popping and jigging in the process. I will be happy to assist anybody with regards to location info, tackle requirements etc.
Trolling... Trolling can be done from general lures to specialized outfits for the numerous Sailfish and Marlin in the area.
Shore Angling.. The shore angling is exceptional. Most fishing is done on the seaward side of the peninsula and the sandspit or point of the peninsula, where water goes in and out of the estuary. The beach is about 25km long where clients have the luxury of getting on the boat at the lodge, crossing the estuary and walking a very short distance – very similar to our fishing done on Inhaca, but with much better results. The biggest advantage when beach fishing is the absence of rocks. There’s a permanent sandy ledge very close to shore with a drop-off to 11 meters dropping off to 35 meters. The fishing is diverse both in quality and in quantity with literally no way of knowing what you’ll catch. For example, you can even catch pelagics and reef-dwelling off-shore species from shore, for example Spanish or King Mackerel, Queen Mackerel, Cobia, Bonito and Green Jobfish
Techniques used: Live Bait ,Dead Bait ,Shark fishing (BIG SHARKS), Bait fishing, Dropshot , Popping
Estuary.. Fishing in the estuary on light tackle is great fun on days where there’s an hour or 2 to spare or on bad weather days. A very successful way of targeting Spanish Mackerel up to 20kg in the estuary is to float livebait with balloons or floats over a little reef, very similar to fishing for Pike in Europe. Very enjoyable, especially with a cold Mozambican beverage! Also a firm favourite for Dropshot anglers.
The Lodge.. Linene Island Lodge is an Eco Lodge which was initially built to have a minimal impact on the sensitive environment. It is a remote island and subsequently has no power and limited fresh water. All creature comforts are met with warm water in the morning and evening, comfortable beds, great food and a very receptive bar! It’s a fishing lodge for fisherman. 5 Chalets sleeps a total of 10 persons with 2 sharing a room. The chalets are spacious, comfortable and the views are spectacular. especially over a nightcap on your private viewing deck. The dining area is functional and comfortable with that ambiance only found in places where dining is enjoyed to the fullest. The food offers the best of local cuisine, like seafood and the chefs are happy to cater to special needs. The bar, as I’ve mentioned, has got a lot of character and has seen many a face. True to lodge form, clients will be treated to huge bonfires under spectacular night skies while enjoying Mozambique’s finest. The bar offers a wide selection of local beers, Heineken, Whiskey, Brandy, Gin, Vodka, Schnapps etc. and fine red and white wines from the best South African vineyards. Laundry services are offered daily on, request and the experienced staff will do their best to tend to clients’ needs.
Guided Fishing... The fishing on offer is fully guided by Adrian, Bertus and very knowledgeable skippers that have been skippering here for 17 years. We guarantee top levels of guided fishing and hopefully some broken springs before getting on the plane back to the UK.
