PIKE FISHING ON LOUGH ERNE

October 28th, 2014

Gord Burton has had some great fishing on Upper and Lower Loughs Erne. He recently returned from a fact finding mission on Finn Lough and the Lower Lough Erne. Bad weather (tail end of a hurricane) had an effect but he landed 12 pike to 10 pounds in 4 days (1 blank day). Good access and a huge number of features. Always somewhere to tuck in despite the gales. Gord caught or had takes in just about all his selected spots and pike responded to mackeral and roach deadbaits plus shad rap, castaic, jointed shallow raider, jointed grandma and radd dog spinner bait lures. We are going to hit the big pike spots in May 2015 where a 42 pounder was caught in spring 2014. A few big brown trout hitting the fry shoals too. This location has vast shoals of bream, hybrids and roach as Gord’s echo sounder revealed.

Denmark fishing with Keith Lidgett

October 28th, 2014

Keith fishes Denmark every year twice a year spending a month at a time. Usually he has a month in June and another starting late August. He targets the Lakelands big lakes in a specific way. He does not use a keepnet and his catches invariably improve day after day. He fishes the feeder with accuracy at distance as these lakes are now very clear. He uses very little ground-bait but instead feeds lots of particle. His base bulk particle is stewed wheat which is very cheap and easy to prepare.

He will put chopped worm and wheat in his feeder when targeting bream. Keith enjoys many 100lb plus bags and has caught Danish Bream into double figures. 12 to 15 pounders are possible.

Fly fishing New Zealand

March 29th, 2013

NEW ZEALAND TACKLE TIPS. By John Horsey.

Rivers

Rods…9’ #5 dry fly only. 9’6” – 10’ # 6/7 for nymphs and streamers – Recommended Greys Streamflex or Hardy Zenith

Reel..Good solid reel with reliable disc drag – Recommended Hardy Ultralite CLS 5000

Line .. WF5F, WF6F and WF7F

Leader..Strong Fluorocarbon – 6lbs min and 8lbs preferable Recommended Rio Fluoroflex or Hardy Mach.  Avoid the so-called finer brands which are expensive, but have poor knot strength and are less abrasion resistant.

Type of base flies..dry/ wets.  Take a range of UK dry flies and also some large Stimulators to act as indicator flies.  Nymphs such as Gold head Hares Ears, Pheasant Tails and Stripped Quill Nymphs all work well in sizes 12 and bigger.  Ensure all flies are dressed on strong hooks, so cheap imports are definitely OUT!  Rod and Reel NZ have a fantastic array of flies at reasonable prices.

Tips/ techniques..… The NZ trout are BIG and many of the rivers are also BIG.  So strength of leader and hooks is vital as you will simply lose that fish of a lifetime.  Take good chest waders and ensure you do not take felt soled wading boots as these are not allowed in NZ.  Studded rubber soled boots are the only way. All nets, waders, flies, rods, reels and other used tackle will be inspected at Customs, so ensure they are all clean and dry.  If in doubt, take new or buy in NZ. .  Take a wading staff and plenty of high factor sunscreen – P20 is superb.

Lakes.

Rods…10’ # 6/7/8.  Same as back home in the UK.  Recommended Hardy Zenith

Reel..Good solid reel with reliable disc drag – Recommended Hardy Ultralite CLS 5000

Line .. WF6/7/8F and a range of sinking lines.  I would take a minimum of Intermediate, DI3, DI5 and DI7.  Midge Tip also a good idea.

Leader..Strong Fluorocarbon – 8lbs min and 10lbs preferable. Recommended Rio Fluoroflex or Hardy Mach.  Avoid the so-called finer brands which are expensive, but have poor knot strength and are less abrasion resistant.

Type of base flies..dry/ wets.  Take a range of UK dry flies and also some large Stimulators to act as indicator flies.  Lots of Wooly Buggars in all their colours, but especially Black, Black and Green and Humungous.  Take UK Nymphs such as Diawl Bachs, Crunchers and Buzzers.  Boobies also work but Blobs do not.  Ensure all flies are dressed on strong hooks, so cheap imports are definitely OUT!  Rod and Reel NZ have a fantastic array of flies at reasonable prices.

Disease Control

DO NOT TAKE IN FLY TYING MATERIALS UNLESS MAN MADE. Felt soles on wading boots are not allowed. All items must be clean.

BIG COD IN NORWAY

October 13th, 2012

The rich waters of northern Norway are now world renown for huge cod. On our trips 77 pounds is the biggest!!! 100lb plus cod exist and are caught commercially. Big cod can be caught from March to October but the prime time for the monster cod in selected areas is from mid March to early May. The Barents Sea Cod migrate into selected fjords to spawn.

Pirks seem to work best but it is always trying big shads too particularly early and late in the season. A through action 20-30lb class boat rod is fine. The Shimano Beastmaster travel rods are excellent. If you are specifically targeting the big halibut then you may have to step up your gear to a 30/50lb class rod. Top colours for pirks are green/chrome, blue/chrome and luminous white.

Centres include: Kokelv, Skjervoy, Lauksletta House on the island of Arnoy, Lauklines and Hamn.

TARGET HALIBUT in NORWAY

October 13th, 2012

Halibut fishing just gets better and better each season. 2012 was the best season by far, one group of four clients had 19 in a single day. Huge halibut have been hooked and lost. One of the biggest weighed in at 374 pounds. Expect to catch them in the 20 to 8o pound range but a good number of 100 pound plus fish are caught each season.

Big shads work well but we have had excellent success this summer with fast drop jigs, more designed for tropical waters.!! Luminous white was particularly effective. Prime time of the year is late summer and into autumn but halibut can be found year round. In mid to late September they tend to move into shallower water, 10 to 30 metres in depth, with a sandy bottom. Often regarded as bottom feeders, halibut can be caught at all depths, taking small coalies in mid water. Strong tackle is essential and your terminal gear must be very strong.

Good centres include; Kokelv, Skjervoy, Arnoy, Lauklines, Hamn.
