North Manitoba
Nueltin Lake
Fishing
Lake Char (lake trout) - (they exceed 80 pounds here) are the prime species, but shoals of Arctic Grayling are to be found in feeder streams and rivers, together with rocky bays. The shallow reedy bays are home to hard fighting Northern Pike. Amazingly it is the Lake Char that are the dominant species in these pristine, crystal clear northern waters. They are top of the food chain in fish terms.
One can choose between spinning, trolling and fly fishing.
Grayling respond to wet and dry flies, the Northern Pike provide great sport on poppers, surface lures and large streamer flies. Lake Char hit just about anything. For those really big fish the bigger the better in terms of presentation. They take large sedge patterns at dusk and will hit large streamer flies (bunny leeches are deadly) at anytime of the day.
Big Lake Char will follow for quite a long distance before taking and a very slow troll (harling) with a medium or fast sink line is deadly. The take can be instant and savage, but at times it's a constant tap, tap, tap. In this situation dropping the fly/lure back to the fish invariably results in a positive take.
The purest fly fisher will love the shallow water fishing of the Narrows Outpost camps further north on Nueltin Lake, reached by a short floatplane trip.
Season
Mid June to late August is prime time.
At Treeline in the south of the lake, Lake Char head deep in late July to mid August, but in the north of the lake they stay shallow in the cooler water right through summer. With a short window of feeding opportunity the fishing is as guaranteed as it gets.
Wildlife
On one of the main Caribou migration routes. Wolves, Black Bears and Grizzlies are to be found here. Moose are in abundance around Treeline Lodge. Bald Eagle and Golden Eagle are quite common. The haunting call of breeding loons can often be heard and Sandhill Cranes breed here too.
Weather
You are in the far north. Summer days are long and can be hot, reaching the late 20s°C. But always take waterproofs with you and thermal underwear and a warm jacket. The weather in these latitudes can change quickly. Polarized sunglasses, sun block and insect repellent are essentials. Black fly are rife in early summer but the hot weather or a breezy day sees them disappear.

"A landscape and a cycle of life that hasn't changed since the last ice age, vast caribou herds migrating north or south to breed or feed, wolves and bears tracking the migration on the lookout for calves or faltering adults, eagles cruising the skies in search of fish, hungry lake char, pike and grayling looking to feed their way through the short summer, the breeding antics and mournful cries of loons, this is a land locked up by ice and snow for eight months of the year but, for four months, there is a frenzy of life - and some of us have to return again and again to witness it."
