fishing in Holland

Holland

Fishing in Holland is about as good as it gets for coarse fish.

Fishing in Holland is by far the best in Europe and there are some solid reasons why.

Waters are carefully managed and strict rules apply to the environment and protection of coarse fish. Access is superb too. Holland enjoys a European climate, colder winters and warmer summers. This ensures the rich waters are extremely well stocked - naturally.

Food rich waters, healthy colour and a huge variety of quality soecies ensures prolific and unbeatable fishing.

Where to Fish

This is not as critical as say Ireland where depths can vary within a few yards. In Holland water systems tend to have a uniform depth right along the stretch. The Voorne Canal for instance only varies by about a foot and it's a few miles long!!!. Look for features like "wides" bends or pumping station inflows. Over hanging trees provide shade and a food supply. It really is where you feed that counts. Pre bait with plenty of particle on still waters but still feed little and often. On waters like the Spui, Vechte and Ijssel you must keep the feed going in with frequency.

Species

You are spoilt for choice... Bream, Hybrids, Roach, Rudd, Perch, Pike, Zander, Ide, Tench and Carp are to be found in most waters. The Ijssel has barbel too.

Water Access

Holland is not a big country you can drive across it in less than two hours. It is highly populated for its size, but has plentiful countryside and lots and lots of productive water.

Access is excellent in most instances. Take care not to block farm access and park off all main roads. Most waters have a small country road along the side.

Colour

For fish to feed confidently and close, a bit of colour in the water is critical. Holland in summer has this in abundance, that's why you can catch on feeder, waggler or pole, even in bright, warm weather.

The waters systems are generally linked and water is pumped right through the system, adding colour and food. (Most of Holland is below sea level).

Tackle

Most waters are ideal for Feeder, Waggler or Pole tactics. Fish UK Style in terms of hooks and line, possibly stepping up a little.

3 to 5lb mainline, 2 to 4lb hook lengths.
Size 18 to 12 hooks.

On the bigger waters you need big floats so be prepared to fish a 10 gram pole float if its pushing through.

Keep-Nets

They are allowed on most waters but we suggest you catch and release. This keeps the swim going for ever; putting large numbers of bream in a keep-net all day usually knocks them out of the feeding cycle for a few days and will generally see weights dramatically reduce. After years of fishing and filming with the world's top anglers, it's something we can emphatically confirm. If you want a few pictures at the end of your session just keep a few of the bigger fish, take their picture and let them go… It's your choice.

Baits

Caster, white maggots (coloured maggots and dyed ground-baits are banned on some waters as they taint the flesh of eels -- a valuable commercial product), worm and sweetcorn are good hook baits.

Boiled wheat is an exceptionally good and cheap particle feed. Add it to your brown crumb or loose feed as if it were casters. Travels well is easy to prepare and it's so cheap. Use it in plentiful proportions, it costs very little.

Wheat Preparation -- Put a few double handfuls into a "cooler box", add hot water so it's covered by a few inches then put on the lid and leave overnight. By morning it's perfection. Use the surplus water for mixing with your brown crumb. Note that wheat will triple in size this way.

Note; Some waters have a ban on red worms until late May due to a close season for Pike, Zander and Eels.

License/Permits

You now buy a licence and permit from the local tackle shop. Do ask about any restricted waters or if additional permits are required, it is not a blanket permit, but the licence is. The tackle dealer is the best person to give you clear advice.
